What happened
In January 2021, Reddit's WallStreetBets piled into GameStop — a struggling mall retailer that hedge funds had heavily shorted — to force a short squeeze.
In three weeks GameStop ripped more than 20x, peaking near $483. Elon Musk tweeted 'Gamestonk!!' and the stock went parabolic. Then on January 28, Robinhood halted buying, and it cracked.
Most people who chased the top were deep underwater within days. At a Congressional hearing, Keith Gill ('Roaring Kitty') summed up the frenzy with four words: 'I like the stock.'
